Typing Speed Test: What's Your Real WPM?

Words per minute is calculated the standard way: every five characters counts as one word, and only words you typed correctly are counted. That is why hammering the keyboard at random will not inflate your score.

Around 40 WPM is typical for someone comfortable with a keyboard, 60–70 is fast, and above 80 usually means years of practice. On a phone touchscreen expect roughly half your desktop number — that is normal and not a reflection of your skill.
